Nature Walk on the New Mossy Woods Trail
Tuesday, January 28, 2025
4:00-5:30 PM
$7 per person
Be amongst the first to explore the new Mossy Woods Trail.  The trail will be open to the public later this spring, but you can explore it this winter with Pickering Director, Mark Scallion.  We’ll walk through the Center’s Meadow and New Woods Loop before joining up to the new Mossy Woods Trail.  The Mossy Woods Trail is on the Center’s newest parcel, 63 acres which were acquired in the fall of 2022.   We’ll start by walking Pickering’s meadow trail and then duck into the adjacent woods for a ramble across open woodland, eventually emerging at the Center’s Meadow Viewing Platform.  Highlights could include woodpeckers, owls, turkeys, foxes and big trees.  Expect uneven terrain and some wet spots on our mile and a half long walk. REGISTER

Flight of the Timberdoodle
TWO DATES!   Sunday, February 23, 2025 or Thursday, March 6, 2025
5:15-6:30 pm
$7 per person
As winter breaks and spring begins to emerge the timberdoodle awakens. At dusk the male woodcock spirals into the sky, creating a trilling sound with its wings. Then he descends, fluttering, warbling and zigzagging back to the spot he began. This unusual mating ritual will take place in Pickering Creeks’ warm season grass meadows which provide ideal habitat for this annual late winter event. We’ll spend a short portion of our time in our rustic classroom learning the basics about this unique upland shorebird before going out at dusk to listen to the sounds of the evening, including owls, frogs and ducks overhead before focusing in on hearing and seeing the woodcocks display.
